  • 2016 Reprint of 1961 Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. With a new introduction by Gordon Allport. James published the two volume “Principles of Psychology” in 1890. Two years later, in order to make the work more available for classroom use, he condensed, reworked and rewrote the two volumes into “Psychology: Briefer Course.” James omitted in this edition much of what he had to say in the two volume set regarding vision, hearing and touch. He kept, fortunately, much of what he had to say about the higher mental processes, information that continues to influence to this day. The largest chapter is on learning, with chapters onHabit, Stream of Consciousness, The Self, Attention, Conception, Association, The Sense of Time, Memory, Imagination, Perception, The Perception of Sense, Reasoning, Emotion, Instinct, Will and more.

  • A volume in Advances in Cultural PsychologySeries Editor: Jaan Valsiner, Clark UniversityIn recent years an increasing dissatisfaction with methods and thinking in psychology as ascience can be observed. The discipline is operating under the tension between the traditionalquantitative and the new qualitative methodologies. New approaches emerge in different fieldsof psychology and education-each of them trying to go beyond limitations of the mainstream. These new approaches, however, tend to be "historically blind" - seemingly novel ideas haveactually been common in some period in the history of psychology. Knowledge of historical trends in that context becomes crucialbecause analysis of historical changes in psychology is informative regarding the potential of "new/old and forgotten" approaches inthe study of psyche. Some approaches in psychology disappeared due to inherent limitations of them; the others disappeared due topurely non-scientific reasons. And some new approaches were rejected long ago for well-justified scientific reasons. This book brings together contributions from leading scholars in different fields of psychology - cognitive psychology, developmental psychology, cultural psychology, methodology of psychology. Each of the contributors discusses methodological issuesthat were more thoroughly understood more than half a century ago than they are now. Overall, the contributions support the idea thatin important ways 60 years old psychology was far...

  • The Bible contains instances, examples, and ideas of principles that can be found in modern psychology books. In fact, many of these principles that psychology has discovered could already be found in Scripture. This should not be considered unusual, since the Bible also contains economic and scientific principles, as well as principles from other disciplines in life. This book, however, is not about psychology based on the Bible or how the Bible is a type of psychology book. It is not about how to be a better counselor, psychotherapist, or psychologist by using Scripture, nor is it a guide on how to use psychology in everyday life from a biblical perspective. This book is not a commentary on the values of psychology through the eyes of the Scripture, nor is it an evaluation of the Scripture through the eyes of psychology. It is not a theology book, nor is it a criticism of psychology. It is simply an account of modern principles of psychology contained in Scripture.

  • A fresh look at the history of psychology placed in its social, political, and cultural contexts A History of Modern Psychology in Context presents the history of modern psychology in the richness of its many contexts. The authors resist the traditional storylines of great achievements by eminent people, or schools of thought that rise and fall in the wake of scientific progress. Instead, psychology is portrayed as a network of scientific and professional practices embedded in specific temporal, social, political, and cultural contexts. The narrative is informed by three key concepts—indigenization, reflexivity, and social constructionism—and by the fascinating interplay between disciplinary Psychology and everyday psychology. The authors complicate the notion of who is at the center and who is at the periphery of the history of psychology by bringing in actors and events that are often overlooked in traditional accounts. They also highlight how the reflexive nature of Psychology—a science produced both by and about humans—accords history a prominent place in understanding the discipline and the theories it generates. Throughout the text, the authors show how Psychology and psychologists are embedded in cultures that indelibly shape how the discipline is defined and practiced, the kind of knowledge it creates, and how this knowledge is received. The text also moves beyond an exclusive focus on the development of North American and European psychologies to explore the development of psychologies in other indigenous contexts, especially from the mid-20th-century onward.

  • 2013 Reprint of 1938 Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. Kurt Lewin (1890-1947) was a German-American psychologist, known as one of the modern pioneers of social, organizational, and applied psychology. Lewin is often recognized as the "founder of social psychology" and was one of the first to study group dynamics and organizational development. Lewin developed the concept of force field analysis, which provides a framework for looking at the factors (forces) that influence a situation, originally social situations. It looks at forces that are either driving movement toward a goal (helping forces) or blocking movement toward a goal (hindering forces). The principle, developed by Kurt Lewin, is a significant contribution to the fields of social science, psychology, social psychology, organizational development, process management, and change management. This book is an early effort to establish the principles of his force field analysis. An attempt is made to describe the position of the concept of force in psychology and to discuss major methods of measuring psychological forces. One of the outstanding properties of force is its directedness. Direction in psychology cannot be defined as physical direction and cannot be determined by Euclidian geometry. A geometry applicable in psychology is that of hodological space. The geometrical properties of this space are described, and examples of its application in...

  • In this, his first book, Matthew Giobbi takes the reader from the earliest days of the experimental psychology movement, continues through the media manufacturing of the social "need for psychology," and brings us to the current political and economic power structure of American psychology. ------As a critical theorist, Giobbi draws the reader's attention to the unconscious motivations of both the psychologist and the experimental psychology movement itself. He then introduces a way forward through Heidegger and presents a psychological ontology which asks the reader to reconsider what psychology and human Being really are. ------"From an upstart position to a restart opportunity, Giobbi argues for and provides a well-documented background check on the modern paradigm of cognitive psychology--with all of its scientistic and positivistic presumptions. Systematically, yet paralogically, Giobbi turns his readers toward seeing what still remains concealed and hidden in modernist thinking: namely, the "sadomasochistic event" of mind-body split, master-slave relations, and subject-object dualisms. Giobbi prescribes a post-cognitive psychology of unconcealedness by way of a Heideggerian philosophy of Dasein."-Victor J. Vitanza, Professor of Rhetoric and Philosophy, EGS

  • The mere mention of the word "psychology" in connection with business was once greeted with a shrug of the shoulders, a raising of the eyebrows and a change of the subject. The average business man was apt to impatiently resent the introduction into business of topics or speculation regarding the soul, or of theories and tales regarding concepts of psychology.Change has come to the man in business. He understands that psychology means "the science of the mind," psychology plays a most important part in business, and that it is quite worth his while to acquaint himself with its fundamental principles. The best authorities on salesmanship and advertising now recognize this fact and emphasize it in their writings. In The Psychology of Salesmanship Atkinson discusses Psychology in Business, The Mind of the Salesman, The Mind of the Buyer and more bringing greater understanding to the reader of the Psychology of Purchase.

  • The Principles of Psychology is a two-volume introduction to the study of the human mind. Based on his classroom lessons and first published in 1890, James has gathered together what he feels to be the most interesting and most accessible information for the beginning student. Psychology, according to James, deals with thoughts and feelings as its facts and does not attempt to determine where such things come from. This would be the realm of metaphysics, and he is careful to avoid crossing over from science into philosophy. This first volume contains discussions of the brain, methods for analyzing behavior, thought, consciousness, attention, association, time, and memory. Anyone wanting a thorough introduction to psychology will find this work useful and engaging. American psychologist and philosopher WILLIAM JAMES (1842-1910), brother of novelist Henry James, was a groundbreaking researcher at Harvard University and one of the most popular thinkers of the 19th century. Among his many works are Human Immortality (1898) and The Varieties of Religious Experience: A Study in Human Nature (1902).
